I will always remember the first earache my little one had. Unsure of why the sudden crankiness we took him to our much trusted allopathic pediatrician. Aham.. his ear is pink!, she said, and prescribed some antibiotic ear drops. We were still fresh to the greener side of life and didn’t consider that there are safe and effective natural alternatives to treating an earache - as well as everything else. We have come a long way since then and have become much more educated in our alternative approaches.
Digging further into this topic, I have learned that over 15 million antibiotic prescriptions are written out every single year in the USA for children with an ear infection. It is is the most over prescribed condition in pediatrics. Based on numerous studies, the medical society is finally catching on that this former routine is no longer suitable for majority of the cases. Why? Simply put, a course of placebo pills has shown to be as effective as antibiotics. With antibiotic resistant bacteria sharply on the rise, medical doctors are being more conservative with their prescriptions. Most cases of acute otitis media run a natural course between 4-7 days and 85% will get better when left untreated, or guided with natural, homeopathic remedies.
So you must be wondering, what really works that is safe and natural? There are several fantastic ways to help guide the body in healing an ear infection. Hydrogen Peroxide is one of them. Readily available in most households, Hydrogen Peroxide is a great natural method to relieve earaches, colds and flues. For best results you should use it with onset of symptoms, the hydrogen peroxide starts to work quickly and effectively at killing the viruses. This is safe to use on infants and small children and works great on adults too.
You may use a small vitamin dropper and place a few drops into the affected ear. Bubbling may occur along with some mild stinging. This is not in anyway painful. It is best to repeat this 2x a day, once in the morning and once before bedtime. For older children and adults, draining the ear is recommended. Fill an ear bulb syringe with warm water, gently release the water into the ear, and then drain it. Repeat on the other side. Then place a few drops of hydrogen peroxide into each side and drain. (Be careful not to get any hydrogen peroxide into your child’s eyes).
Olive oil has also been making its way up in the “natural healing” world. Placing a few drops of olive oil into the affected ear has a warm, soothing effect and helps relieve the pain and pressure. It is also often used to help remove blocked ear wax.
Hylands Natural Remedies are also great. I have heard terrific feedback about the earache relief drops. Thankfully i have never had to resort to them yet, but if anyone tries them and has some feedback, please leave a comment.
Thanks for the great information. Antibiotics is not the way to go. Natural remedies work much better. Thanks!
