Kids Eating Hemp Seeds - Nutritious Hemp Seeds Should be a Part of Every Childs Diet

I am always on the lookout for nutritionally packed food for my family. When I came across Hemp seeds I knew right away that we will have a long lasting relationship.

Harvested from the Cannabis Sativa plant, hemp seeds are considered to be the most nutritionally complete food in the world. It has all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids in order to maintain healthy human life. There is not one single plant that contains such a high amount of essential amino acids in such an easy digestable form. As if this didn’t make it perfect enough, it also contains high amounts of life sustaining nutrients including chlorophyll, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, phytosterols, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, calcium, fiber, histidine, iron, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin and thiamin. And get this, there has NEVER been a reported case of hemp seed allergy!! (***There have been many comments left for this post regarding hemp seed allergies.  Please be aware that hemp seeds do seem to be more allergenic than research has shown***)Now that is what I call a “super food”. Hemp and I became the bestest of friends.

I immediately started adding hemp seeds into everything, my sons breakfast(who was 1.5 at that time), smoothies, salads,  raw vegan desserts and even soups. Hemp seeds are always in stock in our house and are part of our daily lives.

In the beginning of 2009, Hemp milk was introduced into the health food market. With a thick, creamy consistency and a slighly nutty taste, it serves as a delicious alternative to cows milk.

My 4 year old, who is allergic to dairy fell in love with Hemp milk. He drinks it by the glassful, enjoys it in a bowl of cereal with added hemp seeds, and drinks banana milk shakes.

In its raw state, hemp milk is bursting of live enzymes, vitamins and minerals that strengthens ones immune system. Making your own is very simple. You will need a blender, a nut bag or a cheese cloth, water, and of course the hemp seeds. I purchase my Hemp seeds on amazon, I purchase it in bulk as it is the best deal i have been able to find so far. You can find my  Hemp Milk Recipe in my Raw Recipe section or purchase the ready to drink milk in your local health food store.

Keep in mind that encouraging children to participate in the kitchen will make them more interested in the food they are preparing.

(*Please note, that although hemp milk is a great nutritional source, it is not meant to serve as a substitute for breastmilk or formula.)

How do I prepare hemp seeds for eatiing and how do I make the milk?

    Thanks W

Making hemp milk is very easy. You need 1 part hemp seeds and 4 parts filtered water. Blend together for a few minutes. You may add agave syrup or honey as a sweetner and vanilla or coco powder for extra flavor. When well blended , strain through a nut bag or a two ply cheese cloth.
As for eating hemp seeds, they are best when enjoyed raw, providing you with optimally enhanced nutrition. You can sprinkle them in breakfast cereals, salads, soups, etc. You may also bake with them by adding them to any recipe.

Has anyone used hemp milk for someone with eczema. My daughter is 5 and I just switched her off of soy milk which she had been doing for 2 yrs. We are trying different ones now like coconut, almond and hemp. Which one would be better for eczema?

First I would like to say that it is GREAT that you switched your daughter of from Soy Milk. Contrary to what most people believe, Soy (and dairy) has been known to cause more harm then benefit, including but not limited to immune-system breakdown, digestive distress, eczema and allergies, thyroid disorders and more. Here is a great link that goes into more depth about the risks of soy.
Hemp and Almond milk are both considered to be hypoallergenic, and if the cause of eczema is allergy related you should see results. Keep in mind though that it will take up to several months for the body to fully rid itself from soy traces.
I made Raw Almond Milk for my son who had eczema. After several months his eczema fully cleared up. The only place I currently know of that sells really Raw Almonds is LivingNutz.com. All of the store bought “Raw” Almonds have been pasteurized.. so those would not be as effective. Let us know if it works for you. Good Luck!!

Just so you know - there have been a few reported cases of hemp seed allergic reactions. My co-worker’s 25 year old son just spent the weekend in the hospital with anaphylaxis from ingesting hemp seed in a protein shake. They had to give him every antihistamine out there for two days to get the reaction to cease. Doctor said had he not come to the hospital immediately he would have died. He had previously smoked marijuana with no ill effects, but injesting the seeds caused an immediate and severe reaction. There was another reported case back in 2003 of similar reaction to injesting these seeds - so I suspect that there are no reported cases because the seed is a fairly new food source and as more people become exposed we will see an increase in reported allergic reactions. Please be careful when giving this to your children.

Just wanted to share that yesterday I introduced my 1.5 year old daughter to hemp seeds in her breakfast cereal…and she has been sprouting out in hives for the past 24 hours all over her body. So I agree with Lori, that you should be as careful introducing this food as all other new foods into your children’s diets.
And on a side note, as a replacement to milk she drinks oat milk and has been doing very well on it.

How many teaspoons of hempseed / day can I give my 4 year old

I have had a serious reaction to protein shake made with chocolate hemp powder and almond milk, and i needed to be hospitalized for dehydration. Today, a year and a half later i tried hemp seeds with coconut milk and raw chocolate, i had serious reaction again, not as severe but it involved # hours of painful vomiting. I am sticking to fruit and veggie smoothies from now on!

My 2 year old seems to have eczema or dermatitis or something and I found some organic hemp and beeswax cream which I rubbed all over his neck arms and legs and he has come out in hives or some awful red swollen rash. So not sure whats caused it - and am now doing research on hemp and came across this website. Maybe it is the hemp that he’s allergic to? I just dont understand because I seem to be following all the rules, ie using organic soap and washing powder, only using bicarb and vinegar as cleaning products around the house, healthy natural diet, enough sunshine etc so really surprised that he is so prone to skin issues.
