Healing with Breast Milk - Using Breast Milk as a Natural Remedy

Most people know about the health benefits of feeding their babies breast milk. Providing optimum nutrition, it is better then any antibiotic and is comparable to gold for a child’s developing immune system. Children who are breastfed have lower rates of chronic childhood diseases, including, but not limited to respiratory infections, ear infections, diarrhea, and viruses. Mothers benefit as well by reducing the risks of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

However, only a few know the medicinal benefits breast milk has to offer.
When my baby was a newborn he was breastfeeding every 30 minutes round the clock. Thankfully we never had any problems latching on, so I never experienced cracked or bleeding nipples, nonetheless, with constant nursing for the first three months, they did get really sore.

In anticipation of breastfeeding, i stocked up on Earth Mama’s Nipple Butter, a natural alternative to the popular Lansinoh Lanolin Cream. I must say that Earth Mamas cream is great, it relieves soreness and smells yummy, and most important, its safe for baby.. however, its greasy, and applying it when you are out of the comfort of your own home is kind of a hassle. One day when I didn’t have the cream handy, I tried using breast milk to relieve the soreness, and it worked better then I could have possibly imagined. It was an instant relief. After my baby finished nursing, I would rub some breast milk on my nipples and if opportunity allowed, I would let them air dry for a minute or two and soreness would be gone. A perfect natural remedy for sore nipples that is always there and available for whenever you need it.

Experiencing great results with sore nipples, I started to experiment with breast milk. I used it on my sons diaper rash, rubbing expressed milk on the rash with every diaper change and letting his butt air out. His rash would be gone by the next day. I also used it as nose drops for his first cold, and as eye drops when he had a discharge from a blocked tear duct. The results with this natural remedy was amazing. It cleared everything up within days. When my baby got a sunburn on his arm and I didn’t have Aloe Vera handy, I rubbed breast milk into his arm every 20 minutes for the first few hours, and although it remained red for the next two days, he never experienced any discomfort.

Being so impressed with the healing abilities of breast milk, I did some research to find out what other natural remedies it is good for, and here is what I found.

Breast milk can be used for the following:

  • Conjunctivitis or “pink eye”

Wonderful! Just recently I had a rash on my fingers (from chemicals) that was starting to crack from the dryness of the winter and I was using an anti-itch cream for it, but it didn’t do much for the dryness or the cracking and I thought to myself, “I should try putting my breastmilk on it.”; and what do you know, it started to clear up within days! I’ve had this same rash before and it lasted for weeks before. Now I’m wishing I could put some away for after I stop breastfeeding.
